Methanol

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, is the simplest aliphatic alcohol with the chemical formula CH3OH. It is a light, volatile, colorless, and flammable liquid that is more acutely toxic than ethanol. Methanol is produced industrially by hydrogenation of carbon monoxide and is used as a precursor to many commodity chemicals, including formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether.

Industrial production evolved from destructive distillation of wood to synthetic methods. Modern low-pressure methanol production was developed by ICI in the late 1960s using copper catalysts. Methanol has been used as a fuel in German military rockets during World War II (as M-Stoff and in C-Stoff with hydrazine) and as an anti-detonation agent in aircraft engines. It is also found in star-forming regions of space and is used as a marker in astronomy.
